Oct. 15: Black Coffee
On Sunday mornings, I arrive at church early to prepare for worship, reflecting on the Word with a warm cup of coffee in hand. As the crisp fall air settles in, the warmth of the coffee is especially comforting. I have come to enjoy black coffee, free of sugar or cream. However, it wasn’t always my preference. I used to drink a “double-double,” two sugars and two creams. But at the recommendation of a friend, I decided to try black coffee one day. My initial reaction was, “How can anyone enjoy something so bitter?” Yet, over time, my palate adjusted, and what once tasted harsh began to reveal a rich aroma and even a hint of sweetness.
This change in my coffee preference has reminded me of my spiritual growth. Just as infants require soft food because they cannot yet handle solid nourishment, so too are we in our early walk with Christ. When I first gave my life to Jesus, I was like a spiritual infant, drawn to simple Bible stories that were easy to grasp. As my faith deepened, I developed the capacity to engage with the richer, more complex teachings of Scripture—much like my evolving taste for black coffee. I began to appreciate the depth and sweetness that comes from studying God’s Word, as well as the importance of expository preaching, which uncovers layers of truth.
This isn’t to say that one type of coffee—or one style of spiritual teaching—is superior to another. I share this reflection to you as an encouragement to continue growing in the Lord. May we move beyond the surface, past mere entertaining messages, and dive into the living and active Word of God. In its depths, we find truth and hope. As we enter the third week of our series on the Lord’s Prayer, let us stand firm in the truth of Scripture, embracing its profound power to transform and guide our lives in Jesus Name!
