Sept. 10: Familiarity does not equate to true understanding
Familiarity does not always equate to true understanding, whether in relationships or concepts. Take, for example, the bond between husband and wife—perhaps the most familiar of all relationships—yet it is possible for couples to know each other less intimately than outsiders might assume. In the same way, familiarity often leads to neglect. Parents, for instance, are the most familiar figures in their children’s lives, yet this very familiarity can sometimes lead to disrespect and carelessness.
I believe a similar pattern emerges in how many believers engage with the Apostles' Creed. Reciting it as a regular part of worship can sometimes lead to thoughtless repetition, where its meaning is overlooked. Despite frequent recitation, many believers are surprisingly unfamiliar with the details of the Creed. For instance, it is commonly thought that the Apostles themselves wrote it, when in reality, the Apostles' Creed was formulated by the Church in the post-apostolic era. Its name reflects the fact that it faithfully summarizes the apostles' teachings, not because it was written by them directly.
The Apostles' Creed stands as the oldest and most authoritative statement of faith in Christian history. In reciting the Creed, we affirm that our faith is not the product of any one culture or individual, but a historic faith, passed down through generations and confirmed over time. By confessing the Apostles' Creed, we declare that our belief is not solely based on personal experience, but is a shared, communal faith—one that has been tested and upheld since the early Church. In doing so, we participate in a profound unity in the Holy Spirit, joining with believers of the present, the saints of the past, and those who will come to faith in the future.
As we enter the 10th week of the Apostles' Creed series, I pray that the Word has been a profound source of blessing for each of you. May this series serve as a meaningful opportunity to boldly profess your unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.
