The Gospel According to Moses
by Pastor Tom Anderson
Are you at a crossroads in your life? Graduation is a crossroads. Marriage is a crossroads. The birth of a child is a crossroads. Changing jobs is a crossroads. This list could go on: cancer, war, elections, pandemics, riots, divorce. At every crossroads we stop to remember the past; learn from it and then anticipate the future–the changes we need to make and the goals we will strive for.
After forty years of wandering in the desert wilderness, Moses brought God’s people to a crossroads. His life was coming to a close and the people would need new leadership for a new way of life in a new place–the Promised Land. This is the momentous setting for the book of Deuteronomy.
Deuteronomy is a set of three speeches given by Moses on the plains of Moab. His task is to get them to remember their weakness and failure of their human nature; to remind them of God’s faithfulness towards them. Then he calls them to the new life of holiness God wants them to live. It’s a life grounded in love–for that is the central commandment given to them: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (Dt 6:4)
The proper aim of love is a holy life lived before God. Moses carefully and diligently breaks down the meaning of holiness for his people. He starts by repeating the Ten Commandments given at Mt. Sinai–hence the name of the book “Deuteronomy” which is the Greek word for “second giving of the Law.”
The gospel of Jesus Christ is anticipated in the themes of Mose’s speech: salvation; love; holiness and the day of judgment. Moses even announces the coming of Jesus in Deuteronomy 18:15.
The crossroads of life is the place for the renewal of our covenant of faith. It is a time to remember, learn and recommit to the future God has for us. I hope you will join us for this epic journey through the preaching of Moses. Through Deuteronomy, Jesus himself wants to speak directly to you!
